Meaning & Analysis
Rod Walking is a lenticular acrylic panel, originally released in 2010 in an edition of 35, executed by British Pop artist Julian Opie. The subject matter is arguably Opie’s most recognisable: a side-on view of a figure walking, their limbs blurred to evoke a sense of their pace and movement.
The elements and distinguishing characteristics of Opie’s subject have been reduced down to their most essential. Additionally, the use of thick black lines sketching the figure’s contours is a device Opie repeatedly adopts throughout his oeuvre, making a work of his easily identifiable. The man’s head has been reduced to a circle of one solid colour, another repeated stylistic device throughout Opie’s artistic career. Despite omitting the man’s features, which might help to identify who the subject is, the man’s individuality remains in his clothing and gait, which Opie decidedly does not omit.
