... the painting is usually painted flat, a couple of feet from the floor, for ease of access, and to avoid dripping. Paul uses a lot of paint, and needs to be able to move it about on the canvas without gravity drawing it downwards. As he doesn’t sketch at all, all of the working out and risktaking is in full view. This gives his original work an almost dangerous edge, a precipitous feel, as though everything might go wrong at any moment, though if it does, we never see the result! From the blocked-in colour that gives shape and atmosphere, to the shiny inky black scribbly line applied with a screwdriver that gives structure, everything seems accidental. Somehow together though, these series of lucky accidents combine into joyous finished paintings, full of that excitement and passion that Paul Kenton is famous for.
