Jack Vettriano grew up in Fife, in Methil, an industrial town on the North Sea coast with the name Jack Hoggan. Jack trained as a mining engineer, and at the age of 21, a girlfriend gave him a set of paints for his birthday. So far, so straightforward. So Jack taught himself to paint, using instruction manuals, and copying work in the local Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery.
